Collectibles, Rare Items, and Hype…

Collectibles, Rare Items, and Hype…

Since their creation there has always been a market for collectables in the form of trading cards, and memorabilia alike. In the past year there has been a massive increase in the amount of interest surrounding Pokemon cards specifically. Not only is there an interest for collectors to complete their sets and find the rarest cards, there has now been an interest for people looking to resell cards that they have at auction on sites such as Gamenerdz, Card Cavern, and Full Tilt Games. Some of the most rare, as expected, are the first edition cards that were originally released back in 1999. In January of 2021, a rare first edition Blastoise card, made by Magic: The Gathering in 1998, sold for $360,000 at auction, making it one of the most valuable cards in existence as there were only two ever made.

As the reselling of Pokemon cards continues to gain popularity on social media sites such as TikTok or Instagram, it allows for many of the resellers to promote their own brands and make content, such as pack openings and simply showing off their most valuable cards owned, which then attracts those who may be looking to buy. People interested in reselling or buying of rare cards tune into live streams of pack openings to see what cards are out there and available to turn a profit on. With the rising interest on the internet, it has also caused for a new issue to come to life in the form of the scalping of Pokemon cards. Cards are being purchased in bulk by resellers in hopes that they find cards that will go for a higher value and allow them to turn a profit in the future.

We can learn a lot from the recent increase in Pokemon card sales and resales.  There is a clear market when it comes to Pokemon cards and those who realized that are beginning to use it to their advantage.
